Freight transportation is an important part of railway transportation. Vehicles used to carry goods on railways are collectively referred to as railway wagons. According to its different uses, it can be divided into general wagons and special wagons.

Freight wagons are mainly composed of carbody, draft gear system, braking system, and bogie. Different wagons include some proprietary operations or execution mechanisms according to their own characteristics. For example, the side-turning wagon includes a side-turning mechanical structure, the bottom opening car includes a bottom door opening mechanical structure, the tank wagon contains a loading and unloading port mechanism, and the hopperwagon contains a funnel opening and closing execution structure.

Open-top Wagon

The open-top wagon is one of the types of railway wagon. It is characterized by having no cover(roof) and includesfour side walls. On both of sidewallsthere areopenable side doors to facilitate the unloading of goods. 
The main purpose of this wagon is to transport coal or ballast and other bulk items that need no protectionfrom wind and rain. 
Open-top wagonare mainly used for transporting large quantities of cargo such as coal, ore, mineral construction materials, woods, and steel, andcan also be used to transport low-weight machinery and equipment. If the cargo is covered with waterproof canvas or another type of shelter, it can be used instead ofa covered wagon. Therefore, the open-top wagon has great versatility and is the largest in the composition of freight wagon.

Flat Wagon

Flat wagon are mainly used to transport larger or heavier goods such as steel, timber, automobiles, machinery and equipment, and can also transportother goods by containers. Flat wagons can also adapt to national defense needs and load various military equipment. Flat wagons equipped with movable wallboards can also be used to transport bulk cargo such as ore, sand, and stone slag.
 
According to its structure and application, railway flat wagons can be divided into flat wagons,general flat wagons, general container flat wagons, container & general sharing flat wagons, long platform flat-car and special flat cars. Double decker flat wagons are also available beused for transportingautomobiles.International railway flat wagonsare also divided into two categories: general and special flat wagon. Covered Wagon(Box Wagon)

Covered wagon, also commonly known as the box wagon, is a closed train carriage that is generally used to transport cargo. Although the covered wagon is more complex than the flat car in terms of design and manufacturing, the covered wagon is one of the most versatile railway truck cars because it does not need to worry about people or goods falling out of the train. There are open doors on the sidewall, and its size and opening and closing mode depend on the purpose of the design. Some box wagons are used to carry large volumes of goods are also equipped with open rear doors and adjustable partitions.

A covered wagon is a general-purpose vehicle in railway wagon. It is used to transport goods that should avoid sunlight, rain, and snow. Goods include various grains, daily industrial products, and precious equipment.

Hopper Wagon

The hopper wagon can be divided into two types: covered and non-covered vehicles. 
Railway hopper wagons can be covered and non-covered for cold materials, regardingmetallurgical and coking enterprises,thehopper wagons areused forloading hot materials such as Coke extinguishing vehicles, and hot sintering mines. Hopper weighing vehiclesare based on production needs.
Regardless of the type of hopper wagon,the common feature isthe carbody hasset up funnel plates with a fixed inclination angle to the horizontal, and the unloading door is arranged at the bottom or the side of the carbody in order to unload the goods with self-gravity.

A hopper wagon is a railway truck with the end wall tilted to the inside or a large arc at the end. There are funnels under the carbody. The goods are loaded from above. When unloading, the funnel bottom door is opened by manual or pneumatic release. The goods are automatically unloaded by their self-gravity. It is mainly used to transport bulk cargo such as ore, cement, and coal, and it has important significance in railway transportation.

Apart from the non-covered hopper wagon, covered hopper wagon, there are also grain hopper wagons and ballast hopper wagons.
>The hopper wagon is one of several types of railway freight wagon.
>A open-top hopper wagon is designed specifically for the laying of new railway lines or the maintenance of slag for old lines. The carbody is a steel welded structure with side walls. One end is a closed control room, and the other end is equipped with an air storage cylinder, an auxiliary air cylinder, and a pressure-relief gas chamber. The middle is a funnel-type body, and under the bottom frame and the middle of the two bogies is a flat four-link bottom opening structure. The carbody consists of three parts: side wall, end wall, and underframe. The funnel is installed between the beams of the bottom shelf to facilitate the flow of stone slag to the inside and outside of the track. There are two types of base structure: one is the original design with the single center sill structure; while the other is the non-center sill structure design. The longitudinal force borne by the vehicle is transmitted from the traction beam to the side beam and the side wall through the two end partitions of the funnel.
>The grain hopper wagon is specifically used for transporting bulk food.
>The ballast Hopper wagon is a special railway vehicle used to transport railway slag or small pieces of stone. It is a hopper vehicle that unloads the cargo by gravity. It uses a pneumatic device to open the unloading mechanism of the bottom door to achieve the purpose of unloading.

Tank Car

The tank car is a jar-shaped railway transport vehicle used to transport various liquids, liquefied gases, and powdered goods, including gasoline, crude oil, viscous oils, vegetable oils, liquid ammonia, alcohol, water, and various acids and alkalis, cement, lead oxide powder, etc.
The tankcarplay an important role in railway transportation, accounting for about 18 % of the total number of freight wagons.

Tank cars can be divided into two categories: railway transport tank and road transport tank.
Among them, railway transport tanks can be divided into light oil tank, viscous oil tank, acid and alkali tank, liquefied gas tank, and powder cargo tank.
The body of tank car is a horizontal barrel structure, and its barrel part is welded from the upper plate, bottom plate and end plate.

Because the tank bodyis a stiff structure, the weight of the liquid in the tank is mainly borne by the tank, and then passed through the bracket and pillow beam to the bogie. Therefore, the bottom of the tank mainly suffers from horizontal longitudinal traction impact. There is a side beam between the end beam and the pillow beam, which is mainly used to increase the stiffness of the end and to transfer part of the longitudinal force to the pillow beam. In addition, the bottom frame is also equipped with railings, walk through platforms, handrails, and pedals.

>Tank Car Without UnderFrame/Baseless Tank Wagon
Since the body of tank car is a complete cylindrical structure with greater strength and stiffness, the tank can not only withstand the weight of the liquid contained, but also bear the longitudinal force acting on the tank. So the tank wagon also could be designedwithout a base frame. There is no middle beam, side beam or beam between the two pillow beams. The tank is welded with the traction beam and the pillow beam. The connection device between the tank and the bottom frame is removed, and there is no need to clip it. This design could reduce the weight of the tank,and could use the tank body to bearing the load.
The tank body of tank wagon with underframe or not have difference end supporting part. The bottom tank wagon traction beam, bolster beam and tank body connected byweldingare used for transmitting longitudinal forces.
